Stress, Psychological

This category of award can include the following types of psychological injury.  In all cases various factors have to be taken into account such as the injured person's ability to cope with life and work, the extent to which any treatment would be successful and the overall prognosis.

General Psychiatric Damage:

Compensation for this injury varies from "Severe" ( £39,150 - £82,750) where there is a long term inability to cope with work and life and a future vulnerability" to "Less Severe" (£1,100 - £4,200) which might include cases involving where daily activities and sleep were affected.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:

This category is reserved for injuries caused as a result of a psychologically distressing event which was outside the range of normal human experience and which would be markedly distressing to almost anyone.  Compensation for this injury varies from "Severe" ( £42,500 - £71,850) where there the person is not "functioning at anything approaching the pre-trauma level" through to "Less Severe" (£2,800 - £5,875) where virtually a full recovery can be expected to be made.

Chronic Pain:

These are cases where there are symptoms of pain without any, or commensurate, organic pain.  With exception to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome no attempt has been made to divide between these different clinical conditions. Therefore, compensation for this area is provided based on impact, severity and prognosis of the condition.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy ranges from "Severe" in which case the persons ability to work is affected, they will need care and co-existing psychological problems may be present (£37, 500 to £60,000) to "Moderate"  where significant effects will be experienced for a long time but there will be improvement in the future (£20,000 - £37,500).

Other Pain Disorders range from "Severe" in which case even with treatment, symptoms will persist impacting on work and result in the need for care (£30,00 - £45,00) to "Moderate" (£30,00 - £45,000) where near or full recovery has or will  be made.
